Do you feel you are always worrying and having anxious thoughts?
Are you feeling restless and struggling to sleep at night because of these thoughts? Rumination and negative thoughts can be so persistent in the middle of the night and can keep us awake no matter how hard we try to shut them out. The worrying can persist throughout the day too. We can end up feeling tense and edgy! And even though you hate feeling like that, it can still be so difficult to stop the “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios. So exhausting!
We might think that worrying helps us to solve problems, that it will prepare us for the worst or even prevent something bad from happening. We can start to believe that worrying is actually helping us. It becomes a vicious circle.
Of course, it can also be natural to worry about some things, for instance a job interview, but if worrying becomes uncontrollable and we think that our worrying is serving us a purpose, it can seriously affect the quality of our lives.
If this is happening to you, below are a few things you could try to help you take back some control of the worrying thoughts.
- Try practising relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation. These techniques can help reduce intrusive worry.
- You could also try focusing on whatever is in front of you, or something around you, something real for you to focus on and bring your attention to. It can distract you and take your thoughts away from worrying about the future, negatively forecasting and all the completely unknown stuff that hasn’t even happened.
- Bringing your attention to the here and now, can help calm your racing mind.
- Try asking yourself –
Is this worrying making me feel better?
Is it actually helping me in any way at all?
What else could I be doing right now, instead of worrying like this?
Can hypnotherapy help?
Yes it can. Solution focused hypnotherapy can be very effective for anyone struggling with worry and anxiety. It can help you calm your thoughts, feel much more relaxed and gain more control over your racing mind. When we are feeling more relaxed, we operate from our intellectual brain and we cope better in life.
This is a great quote – “Worry is like a rocking chair… it gives you something to do, but never gets you anywhere.” ~Erma Bombeck
